Report and photos from Ministers visit to Switzerland June 2014

Switzerland is Ireland’s 5th largest export market, ahead of larger countries such as: France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. Total bilateral trade last year was almost 6 billion Euros. Economic exports from Irish indigenous companies to Switzerland have grown a very impressive 47% over the last 3 years – averaging over 15% growth per annum (total last year of 275 million Euros).

The recent trade mission led by Minister Sean Sherlock was a great success. He was accompanied by representatives of 65 Irish companies (one of the largest groups ever for a trade mission). They visited the three largest business centres in Switzerland – Geneva, Basel and Zurich and held receptions for the members of the Irish Business Network who have active chapters in these cities.

The E.I. team were greatly pleased with the trade mission and with the many new contacts made and others consolidated.

The trade mission, which took several months to prepare, saw intensive and successful cooperation between the Embassy and the EI representatives based in Dusseldorf and the IBN.
The Embassy in Bern is reporting a growth in the number of young Irish people working in Switzerland in recent years of about 3,000 expanding the Irish community here towards 8,000 people
