IBN invitation: virtual event to celebrate Ireland’s role at the UN in Geneva & the launch of the Geneva Chapter of the IBN

November 5, 2020 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

Invitation to the Irish Business Network (IBN) Switzerland’s Virtual Event on Thursday 5th November 2020 19.00-20.30

Dear IBN Switzerland members,

We hope you are keeping well.

Are you interested in:

  • Hearing a first-hand account of the mission of Ireland’s UN diplomatic corps based in Geneva, Switzerland?
  • Learning more about Ireland’s new seat on the UN Security Council and why it matters?
  • Connecting with other Irish professionals living and/or working in Switzerland?
  • Meeting our great new IBN Geneva Chapter Lead?

If so, then our next exciting virtual event is for you!

We are delighted to announce the official launch of our Geneva Chapter of the IBN.

To mark this occasion, Ambassador Michael Gaffey, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in Geneva, has kindly accepted our invitation to join in an informal discussion moderated by Joanne Goetz, our new Geneva Chapter Lead.

2020 is a milestone year for the UN as it marks its 75th Anniversary in the context of a global pandemic. It has also been a great year for Ireland, as we have won a seat on the UN Security Council for 2021-2022.

Ambassador Gaffey will speak to this but will also walk us through the work that he and his team do in Geneva across a multitude of UN, and other, agencies and highlight some of the priority issues for Ireland in the coming months.

There’s never a dull moment for the team, considering that Geneva is host to 38 international institutions, organisations, and bodies as well as a secretariat established under a treaty, approximately 750 NGOs and the permanent representatives of 177 member states, including Ireland.

We hope that this event will enable IBN members to gain some insights into the work of our UN diplomatic corps to promote Ireland’s foreign policy at the international level on global issues such as, but not limited to, human rights, disarmament, humanitarian action and trade.

The format of the event will be such that participants will be welcome to join in an open and lively discussion and time permitting we will do a short quiz to test your knowledge on the UN.

Feel free to also BYOB for a virtual toast at the end to celebrate the launch of the Geneva Chapter of the IBN!
