James Joyce Walk 2020

“Yssel that the limmat?”, “legging a jig or so on the sihl”.

The IBN was delighted to once again team up with the Zurich James Joyce Foundation (ZJJF) to offer our members a guided tour of Joyce’s Zurich. The event took place on Saturday 24 October and was led by Ursula Zeller, curator, with Silke Stebler, both from the ZJJF.  The walking tour took in where the Joyce family lived, where Joyce worked, the bars and restaurants he frequented and sometimes wrote in.  Our guides also discussed aspects of Swiss culture and life experiences of Joyce in Zurich that found their way into his works, reading aloud extracts for the group. Finally, the tour ended with a visit to James Joyce’s final resting place at Fluntern Cemetery, Zurich.

This was our second time hosting the Joyce event.  As it continues to prove a very interesting, interactive and popular event with our members we will aim to repeat it in 2021. We would like to thank our members for so respectfully adhering to the Covid-19 precautions that were put in place, in particular wearing masks throughout. Our thanks also to the ZJJF for agreeing to proceed with the event despite the current unprecedented times that we find ourselves in.
