Your rights as an Irish citizen living in Switzerland

Over 100 people attended the Irish Business Network’s series of events in Zurich,
Basel and Lausanne on “Living in Switzerland from a legal standpoint”.
The three events took place with the support of the Irish Emigrant fund between November
2016 and June 2017. Zurich-based legal consultants Treuco AG – specialists in Swiss
financial, tax and legal issues – were invited to inform the Irish community about their legal
rights in the country. They shed light on some of the key legal and tax matters expatriate
citizens may need to deal with when living here, and the implications if they choose to return
home to Ireland.
Issues relating to setting up a business in Switzerland were illustrated by the case study of
an Irish family who moved here to set up an Irish bar. Tax laws on federal, cantonal and
communal levels, rental agreements, succession law, matrimonial regimes, employment law
and company law were explained in great detail.

Feedback from the event was very positive. It was agreed that understanding one’s legal
rights is very important for people living outside their home country – and the help of
Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Embassy in Switzerland and the Government of Ireland was very
appreciated by event attendees.

Slongo, who were not only extremely knowledgeable but also very helpful and open to the
numerous questions they received.
